LOCKDOWN AT EDMONTON INSTITUTION

EDMONTON, AB, May 25, 2007 - Inmates at Edmonton Institution were locked in their cells as the institution was placed on lockdown status on May 24 in order to facilitate a thorough search of the institution.

The lockdown was initiated for the purpose of initiating a general search as a result of the discovery of homemade contraband weapons in the institution.

In order to maintain the safety of staff, offenders and the public, this lockdown will remain in place until the search has been completed. The search may take several days.

Inmate's visits and regular institutional routine have been restricted until the search has been completed.

Edmonton Institution is a maximum security federal penitentiary located 15 km north of Edmonton. Currently there are 248 inmates incarcerated at Edmonton Institution.
