LOCKDOWN AT DRUMHELLER INSTITUTION

DRUMHELLER, AB, July 4, 2007 - Drumheller Institution inmates have been locked in their cells to facilitate an exceptional search. The search began at about 1800hrs on July 03. The search was triggered by growing unease in the population and reports of jail made weapons in the population.

Coinciding with the exceptional search is a scheduled drug search involving drug detector dog teams from various CSC institutions in the Prairies, the Medicine Hat Police Department, Alberta Corrections, and the Canada Border Services Agency.

The Institution will remain locked down while staff complete a thorough search of the institution. The search is expected to take a few more days. Visits to the institution will be suspended for the duration of the search.

Drumheller Institution is a federal penitentiary located 140 km northeast of Calgary, currently accommodating 607 medium security and 66 minimum security inmates.
