Edmonton, AB, September 5, 2007 - At approximately 0805 hours Wednesday, September 5, 2007, during breakfast feeding, a major altercation involving several inmates occurred. The altercation resulted in several inmate injuries. The severity of the injuries is unknown at this time. All five inmates injured are receiving medical care at outside hospital.
The institution is locked down and secure, and at this point the institution will remain on lockdown status, with inmates being fed in their cells, until this situation has been fully investigated.
An update will be forthcoming once additional information is made available.
Edmonton Institution is a maximum security facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in Edmonton, Alberta and currently houses a population of 230 male offenders.
