DRUMHELLER, AB, October 2, 2007 - Drumheller Institution inmates are locked in their cells to facilitate an investigation into the assault of an inmate at approximately 2115 hours on October 1, 2007. An inmate was found by officers who were patrolling in the exercise yard. He was unconscious and unresponsive. When he was taken to the Institutional Health Care Centre, the nurse on duty found that he had severe injuries to the side of his head and chest. The offender was taken by ambulance to the Drumheller Regional Hospital where he was assessed by a doctor and then airlifted by STARS to a Calgary hospital.
He is expected to survive his injuries.
The Institution will remain locked down until the RCMP and Correctional Services Canada complete their investigations.
Drumheller Institution is a federal penitentiary located 140 km northeast of Calgary, currently accommodating 528 medium security and 71 minimum security inmates.
