FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT STONY MOUNTAIN INSTITUTION

WINNIPEG, MB, January 28, 2008 - On January 26, 2008 an inmate at Stony Mountain Institution died of apparent natural causes while in custody.

The inmate was 65 years old and serving a life sentence for second degree murder. The identity of the inmate is not being released pending notification of the next of kin.

As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner are called in to investigate. In addition, Correctional Services Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Stony Mountain Institution is a federal institution for medium security inmates located 11 kilometers north of Winnipeg. There are currently 548 inmates in total at the facility.
