CONTRABAND AT DRUMHELLER INSTITUTION

DRUMHELLER, AB, May 12, 2008 - On May 7, the institutional staff carried out a large scale search for narcotics and other contraband at Drumheller Institution. In order to conduct the search, Drug Detection Dog Teams from the Correctional Service of Canada, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canada Border Service Agency, the Alberta Solicitor General and the Saskatoon Police Department attended the institution. A total of nine dogs and their handlers took part in the search along with Drumheller Institution staff.

During the search small quantities of hash oil, hashish, ecstasy tablets, marijuana, assorted items of drug paraphernalia, and a variety of unauthorized items were found.

The search is part of the Correctional Service of Canada's efforts to control the use of intoxicants in its institutions.

This is the second time Drumheller Institution has conducted a large scale search of its facilities using a multi-agency collaboration of Drug Detector Dogs in cooperation with other federal agencies, provincial government and police agencies.

Drumheller Institution is a federal penitentiary located 140 km northeast of Calgary, currently accommodating 597 medium security and 71 minimum security inmates.
