FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT EDMONTON INSTITUTION

EDMONTON, AB, May 20, 2008 - On May 19, 2008 at approximately 9 p.m., an inmate at Edmonton Institution was assaulted by a group of inmates. The victim of the assault was taken by ambulance to an outside health care facility, where he remains awaiting surgery. The victim's name is presently being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Edmonton Police Service was notified and are presently conducting an investigation. The area where the assault took place as well as a number of residential units are presently on lockdown as a result of the assault. The remainder of the Institution is on a modified routine.

The Correctional Service of Canada will continue to work with the police in an effort review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action as necessary.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Edmonton Institution is a maximum security facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in Edmonton, Alberta and currently houses a population of 246 male offenders.
