ASSAULT AT DRUMHELLER INSTITUTION

DRUMHELLER, AB, May 20, 2008 - On Monday May 19, 2008 at approximately 4:10 p.m., a 40- year old inmate was assaulted by other inmates at Drumheller Institution. The injured inmate was taken by air ambulance to hospital in Calgary where he remains in critical condition.

The institution is under lockdown to facilitate the RCMP conducting their investigations.

The Correctional Service of Canada will continue to work with the police in an effort review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Drumheller Institution is a federal penitentiary located 140 km northeast of Calgary, currently accommodating 602 medium security and 72 minimum security inmates.
