FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT SASKATCHEWAN PENITENTIARY

PRINCE ALBERT, SK, June 11, 2008 - At approximately 12:45 a.m. on June 11th, 2008, an offender from Saskatchewan Penitentiary was pronounced dead by physicians at a hosptial in Prince Albert following a lengthy illness.

The deceased is Warner Pitroff. He was 61 years old. He was serving a life sentence for non-capital murder from 1976. Next of kin has been notified.

As is the case whenever an offender dies while in custody, the police and coroner were notified. The death may be the subject of a coroner's inquest as is common with any death of a person in custody.

Saskatchewan Penitentiary is a federal penitentiary located 1 km West of Prince Albert, SK, currently accommodating 493 medium security inmates. The Saskatchewan Penitentiary Maximum Security Unit houses 91 maximum security inmates.
