FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INCIDENT AT STONY MOUNTAIN INSTITUTION

Winnipeg, MANITOBA, January 11, 2009 - At approximately 8:30 p.m. on January 10, a major altercation involving several inmates occurred at Stony Mountain Institution. The altercation resulted in several inmate injuries.

Inmates barricaded themselves inside a unit of the institution and negotiations began to resolve the situation. Staff secured the unit at approximately 2:00 a.m.

Five inmates were taken to outside hospitals to receive care for their injuries. One inmate has returned to the institution. The extent of the injuries is unknown at this time. No staffs were injured during this incident.

The institution is currently on lockdown.
