FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONTRABAND SEIZURE AT SASKATCHEWAN PENITENTIARY

PRINCE ALBERT, SK – On March 20, 2009 at approximately 6:20 p.m. Correctional Officers at Saskatchewan Penitentiary searching a medium security unit confiscated a number of contraband items.

The unit has been put on lock down and will remain on this status while staff complete a thorough search.  The unit will reopen once the search has been completed. The balance of the institution is operating on normal routine.

Saskatchewan Penitentiary is a federal penitentiary located 1 km west of Prince Albert, SK.  There are presently 472 medium security inmates and 110 inmates in the maximum security unit.
