FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT EDMONTON INSTITUTION

Edmonton, Alberta – At approximately 2:25 p.m. on April 10, a 24 year old inmate of Edmonton Institution was assaulted.

The injured offender was taken to outside hospital for treatment of his injuries. He remains in hospital at this time.

All inmates on the unit where the assault occurred were immediately placed on lockdown status. The lockdown will facilitate a search of the unit while ensuring the safety and security of the public, staff and inmates. The rest of the institution remains on normal operating routine.

The Correctional Service of Canada investigation will also review the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Edmonton Institution is a federal penitentiary currently accommodating 240 maximum security inmates.
