FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT SASKATCHEWAN PENITENTIARY

Prince Albert, Saskatchewan – At approximately 9:50 p.m. on April 25, a 38 year old inmate of Saskatchewan Penitentiary reported to correctional officers that he had been assaulted.

The injured offender was taken to outside hospital for treatment of his injuries. He remains in hospital at this time.

All inmates on the unit where the assault occurred were immediately placed on lockdown status. The lockdown will facilitate a search of the unit while ensuring the safety and security of the public, staff and inmates. The rest of the institution remains on normal operating routine.

The Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Saskatchewan Penitentiary is a federal penitentiary located 1 km west of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. The institution currently accommodates 487 medium security and 121 maximum security inmates.
