FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Edmonton, Alberta – On Wednesday May 6, 2009 one unit of Edmonton Institution was placed on lockdown status. The remainder of the institution is operating on normal routine.
The lockdown was ordered after a search uncovered contraband in an area where a minor altercation between two inmates had taken place.
The lockdown will facilitate a search of the unit where the contraband was discovered. The search will also ensure the safety and security of the public, staff and inmates.
The unit in question will re-open once institutional management determines it is safe to do so.
Edmonton Institution is a federal penitentiary currently accommodating 248 maximum security inmates.
