FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT ON INMATE AT BOWDEN INSTITUTION

Innisfail, Alberta, July 14, 2009 – On July 11, 2009 at approximately 1610 hours, a 26 year-old inmate was assaulted in his living unit at Bowden Institution. Staff were in close proximity to the assault and were able to intervene immediately to stop the fight.

The injured inmate was removed to the Health Services unit for assessment and subsequently taken to outside hospital for treatment of facial injuries.

The local detachment of the RCMP has been contacted and has attended the institution to investigate this matter.

CSC will continue to work with the police to review the circumstances surrounding this incident and will take action where necessary

Bowden Institution is a federal penitentiary located 100 km north of Calgary, currently accommodating 580 medium security and 70 minimum security inmates.
