CONFISCATION FROM A VISITOR AT BOWDEN INSTITUTION

BOWDEN, Alberta, July 27, 2009 - On July 24, 2009 drugs and tobacco were confiscated from two visitors after a routine search. Correctional Service Canada (CSC) seized two ounces of marijuana, one bail of tobacco and one ounce of powdered cocaine with an Institutional value of approximately $24,000. The contraband was detected prior to entry into the facility.

The two visitors were arrested and taken into custody by the R.C.M.P. Criminal charges are pending.

CSC has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These include such things as searches of offenders and visitors, buildings and cells, and the use of ion scanners and drug detector dogs.

The authorities at Bowden Institution wish to remind citizens that there is a toll-free telephone line, 1-800-278-0172, for reporting any pressure to which a visitor may be subjected by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault and loan sharking. Such information is treated with confidentiality, and a security intelligence officer will provide follow-up.

Bowden Institution is a medium security federal institution located approximately 100 km north of Calgary on Highway No. 2.
