FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE ASSAULT - BOWDEN INSTITUTION

Innisfail, Alberta, July 31, 2009 - On July 30, 2009 at approximately 20:00 hours, a 26-year-old inmate was assaulted in the gymnasium at Bowden Institution. The injured inmate presented himself to staff and was subsequently taken by ambulance to an outside hospital where he remains in stable condition.

The institution remains under lockdown to facilitate an investigation by the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) and RCMP. CSC will continue to work with the police to review the circumstances surrounding this incident and will take action where necessary.

Bowden Institution is a federal penitentiary located 100 km north of Calgary, currently accommodating 567 medium security and 71 minimum security inmates.
