ASSAULT AT SASKATCHEWAN PENITENTIARY MAXIMUM SECURITY UNIT

Prince Albert, SK, November 1, 2009 –At approximately 1400 hours on October 31, 2009, Correctional Officers observed an injured inmate in a Common Room at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary Maximum Security Unit. The injured inmate had been the victim of an apparent assault. Lock up was successfully completed and all remaining inmates were safely returned to their cells and have been accounted for.

No staff were involved in the incident nor did any staff sustain any injuries during the management of the incident.

The victim was transported to an outside hospital for further treatment of injuries sustained as a result of the assault.

The Correctional Service of Canada has zero tolerance for institutional violence. The range on which the incident occurred at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary Maximum Security Unit remains locked down until further notice. The rest of the Unit remains on regular routine. The RCMP have been notified, and CSC will conduct an investigation into the incident.

Saskatchewan Penitentiary is a federal penitentiary located 1 km west of Prince Albert, SK, currently accommodating 477 medium security inmates and158 maximum security inmates.
