Grande Cache, Alberta, December 29, 2009 – Grande Cache Institution has been locked down to facilitate a search of the institution. The lockdown will include the cancellation of all scheduled visits to the inmates.
The search began late in the evening on December 28 when it was discovered that inmates had accessed contraband items which had the potential to be used as weapons. The lockdown and search are being conducted to ensure the continued safety of the public, staff and inmates.
The institution will remain on lockdown status until institutional managers determine it is safe to return to normal routine.
Grande Cache Institution is a federal penitentiary currently housing 236 inmates; 117 minimum-security male inmates and 119 medium-security male inmates.
