FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SEARCH AT SASKATCHEWAN PENITENTIARY

Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, January 13, 2010 - At approximately 2:45 p.m., staff at Saskatchewan Penitentiary discovered that inmates may have come into contact with unauthorized items. A search of the institution was immediately initiated.

The search is being conducted to ensure the ongoing safety and security of the institution, its staff and the inmates. Although the search will be ongoing, regularly scheduled visits to the medium-security offenders will not be affected.

The maximum-security units are also scheduled to operate under normal routine.

Saskatchewan Penitentiary is a federal penitentiary located one kilometre west of Prince Albert, SK, and currently accommodates 477 medium-security inmates and158 maximum-security inmates.
