FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ESCAPE AND RECAPTURE AT WILLOW CREE HEALING LODGE

Duck Lake, SK, March 3, 2010 - At approximately 9:55 a.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, staff at the Willow Cree Healing Lodge discovered that inmate Louie Kenneth Bird escaped. A search of the facility and grounds was conducted. Bird was apprehended at 10:18 a.m. and returned to custody without incident.

Bird is a 63-year-old Aboriginal male offender serving an indeterminate life sentence for Second Degree Murder from May 2, 1985.

The Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the escape and will take action where necessary. Willow Cree Healing Lodge is a minimum security institution that accommodates 40 inmates.
