Grande Cache, Alberta, March 24, 2010 – Grande Cache Institution has been locked down to facilitate a search of the institution. The lockdown will include the cancellation of all scheduled visits to the inmates.
The search began late in the morning on March 24, 2010, when it was discovered that inmates may have had access to contraband items. The lockdown and search are being conducted to ensure the continued safety of the public, staff and inmates.
The institution will remain on lockdown status until institutional managers determine it is safe to return to normal routine.
Grande Cache Institution is a federal penitentiary with a current population of 242 inmates; 117 minimum-security male inmates and 125 medium-security male inmates.
