Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, April 4, 2010 - At approximately 7:05 a.m. on April 4, 2010, an offender at the Regional Psychiatric Centre was found unresponsive but breathing in his room. Emergency Medical attention was provided, however he died a short time later. The exact cause of death is not known at this time.
The deceased is 50-year-old Hedley Thomas Stringer who was serving a life sentence for two counts of Assault Causing Bodily Harm and Assault of Peace Officer while in custody. His sentence commenced in 1996. He had been receiving treatment and care from the staff at the Regional Psychiatric Centre since May 27, 2009.
As is the case whenever an offender dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been notified. The Correctional Service of Canada will conduct a review of the circumstances surrounding the death. Next of kin have been notified.
The Regional Psychiatric Centre is a multi-level psychiatric hospital located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and operated by the Correctional Service of Canada through an affiliation agreement between Government of Canada and the University of Saskatchewan. The Centre provides assessment, intensive programming, treatment for mental disorders, and 24-hour medical care to individuals from the federal and provincial justice systems. There are currently 189 patients receiving assessment and/or treatment at the Centre.
