Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, April 6, 2010 – Saskatchewan Penitentiary is locked down to facilitate a search of the institution. Although the lockdown will affect the medium-security units of the penitentiary, the maximum-security unit is scheduled to operate under normal routine.
The search began at approximately 3:45 p.m. when it was discovered that inmates had accessed contraband items. The lockdown and search are being conducted to ensure the continued safety of the public, staff and inmates. The institution will remain on lockdown status until institutional managers determine it is safe to return to normal routine.
Saskatchewan Penitentiary is a federal penitentiary located one kilometre west of Prince Albert, SK, and currently accommodates 496 medium-security inmates and150 maximum-security inmates.
