Drumheller, Alberta, April 13, 2010 – On April 11, 2010, Correctional Officers conducting a patrol in the yard of Drumheller Institution found a large number of contraband items, including cell phones, illegal drugs and tobacco.
Estimated institutional value for the contraband seized is $150,000.00.
Correctional Service Canada (CSC) has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These include such things as ion scanners, drug dogs and searches of offenders, visitors, buildings.
As part of its Transformation Agenda, CSC is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates. CSC also works in partnership with the police to prosecute inmates and others who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.
Drumheller Institution is a federal penitentiary located 140 km northeast of Calgary, currently accommodating 537 medium security and 72 minimum security inmates.
