FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Winnipeg, Manitoba, July 26, 2010 – On July 24, 2010, staff seized drugs from two (2) visitors who attended Stony Mountain Institution. The seizures were the result of combined efforts by Correctional Officers, the Detector Dog Team, and Security Intelligence Officers.
Marijuana, morphine, and oxycontin were seized. The institutional value of the seizure has been estimated at $12,600.00. The visitors were arrested by the Stonewall detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). One visitor was charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking while the other visitor was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Correctional Service Canada (CSC) has a number of tools available that are consistently used in our efforts to control the flow of drugs into our institutions. These tools include ion scanners and drug dogs to search buildings, offenders, and visitors.
As part of its Transformation Agenda, CSC is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates. CSC also works in partnership with the police to prosecute inmates and others who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.
Stony Mountain Institution wishes to remind citizens that there is a confidential Security Intelligence Tip Line at (204) 344-6000 for reporting concerns regarding institutional drug trafficking.
Stony Mountain Institution is a medium security federal penitentiary located 11 km north of Winnipeg, currently accommodating 609 inmates.
