FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE ASSAULT AND LOCKDOWN AT DRUMHELLER INSTITUTION

August 16, 2010, Drumheller, Alberta - On Friday August 13, 2010, at approximately 20:20 hours, Correctional Officers reported an inmate with visible signs of injury. Staff took immediate action, provided First Aid to the victim, and accounted for all inmates within the institution. The victim appeared to have stab wounds to his abdomen and was transported to hospital via ambulance where he remains in stable condition.

The RCMP are investigating the incident, and criminal charges are pending.

Drumheller Institution remains locked down to facilitate a search of the institution and will re-open to normal routine one the Warden is satisfied that it is safe to do so. Visitors are advised to call the institution in advance of attending.

Ensuring the safety and security of the institution, staff, and the public remains the highest priority for the Correctional Service of Canada.

Drumheller Institution is a federal penitentiary located 140 km southeast of Calgary, with a total of 573 medium security and 69 minimum security inmates.
