ASSAULT AND LOCKDOWN AT STONY MOUNTAIN INSTITUTION

Stony Mountain, Manitoba, September 17, 2010 - On Thursday, September 16, 2010 at approximately 9:15 p.m., Correctional Officers observed an inmate showing visible signs of injury. Staff took immediate action and provided first aid to the victim. The victim was found to have stab wounds and was transported to hospital via ambulance where he remains in stable condition. Shortly after the first incident, and in another area of the institution, an inmate assault occurred. As a result of the second incident, a victim was escorted to hospital for assessment and later returned to the institution.

The Correctional Service of Canada and the RCMP are investigating the incidents. Criminal charges are pending.

Stony Mountain Institution's general population is currently locked down to facilitate the investigation and will re-open to normal routine once the Warden is satisfied that it is safe to do so. The lockdown and investigation are being conducted to ensure the continued safety of the public, staff and inmates. Visitors are advised to call the institution in advance of attending.

Stony Mountain Institution is a medium security federal penitentiary located 11 km north of Winnipeg, currently accommodating 594 inmates.
