FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CONFIRMED NOROVIRUS AT REGIONAL PSYCHIATRIC CENTRE

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, January 25, 2010 – On Monday January 24, 2011, a patient at the Regional Psychiatric Centre presented to medical personnel with gastrointestinal flu like symptoms commonly associated with Norovirus. The institution took precautionary measures in accordance with Public Health and Correctional Service of Canada Infection Control Policy.

As of January 25, 2011, there has been one confirmed case of the Norovirus at the facility. Public Health and CSC authorities are presently awaiting the results of tests of other unconfirmed cases of patients presenting with Norovirus symptoms.

The RPC continues to work closely with Public Health and Medical Officials ensuring measures of treatment and prevention are available to staff, patients and visitors of the facility. The institutional routine will be returned to normal when it is safe to do so. Regularly scheduled visits are cancelled at this time.

The Regional Psychiatric Centre is a multi-level psychiatric hospital located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and operated by the Correctional Service of Canada through an affiliation agreement between Canada and the University of Saskatchewan. The Centre provides assessment, intensive programming, treatment for mental disorders, and 24-hour medical care to individuals from the federal and provincial justice systems. There are currently 193 patients receiving assessment and/or treatment at the Centre.
