DEATH OF INMATE AND LOCKDOWN AT GRANDE CACHE INSTITUTION

Grande Cache, Alberta, December 4, 2011 - On December 4, 2011, a 56 year-old inmate from Grande Cache Institution was found unresponsive in his cell. Correctional Officers immediately performed CPR and an ambulance was called.  Emergency Services were notified and arrived at the institution, but were unable to revive the offender.  Efforts are underway to notify next of kin.

As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been notified. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As the result of an earlier incident, Grande Cache Institution has been placed on lockdown.  All visits have been cancelled until further notice. This decision is unrelated to the inmate death. The Institution will return to normal operations once the Warden determines it is safe to do so.
