FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LA MACAZA, QC, May 22, 2004 - On May 21, 2004, an inmate at La Macaza Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary, was found unconscious in his cell by correctional officers during a range walk around 6:55 p.m.

Resuscitative measures were administered until the ambulance arrived. The inmate was transferred to the CHCR Antoine Labelle in L'Annonciation, where he was pronounced dead by a physician around 8:10 p.m.

Daniel Savaria, 46, had been serving a sentence of just over 10 years since October 25, 1995.

A coroner's inquest will take place to determine the causes of death. The Sûreté du Québec and the Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
