STE-ANNE-DES-PLAINES, QC, September 4, 2004 - On September 4, 2004, Ahmet Topcu, an inmate at the regional hospital at Archambault Institution in Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, died following a serious illness that had reached the terminal phase.
The inmate had been transported from Port-Cartier Institution on August 13 as a result of his illness. He was pronounced dead at approximately 12:20 a.m.
Ahmet Topcu, who was 43 years old and of Turkish origin, had been serving a life sentence for first degree murder since May 5, 1994.
The Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an investigation into the circumstances of the death.
The Sûreté du Québec and the coroner were called to the scene to examine the facts surrounding this death and to take the necessary measures.
