STE-ANNE-DES-PLAINES, QC, November 19, 2004 - On November 19, 2004, Yannick Milot, an inmate incarcerated at the Regional Reception Centre in Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, a maximum security federal penitentiary, was found hanging in his cell at approximately 4:20 p.m. during a range walk by correctional officers.
Institutional staff tried to resuscitate the inmate until paramedics arrived. He was transferred to Cité de la santé hospital in Laval, where a doctor pronounced him dead at around 5:30 p.m. The family was notified.
Yannick Milot, 23 years of age, had been serving a five-year sentence since September 1, 2004.
A coroner's inquest will take place to determine the cause of death. The Sûreté du Québec and the Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
