DONNACONA, QC, December 17, 2004 - On December 16, 2004, during an inmate and cell search, correctional officers found a wrapped white substance inside a container of baby powder. Analysis showed that it was 21 grams of crack cocaine. In another container, 8 grams of crack cocaine were also found.
The search resulted in the seizure of 29 grams of (crack) cocaine, with an institutional value of $7,250.
Following the seizure, an inmate was admitted to segregation and criminal charges will be filed against him. The case was transferred to the Sûreté du Québec for investigation.
Since the beginning of 2004, a number of seizures (including this interception, marijuana: 419.7 grams - hashish: 403.3 grams - heroin: 19.9 grams - cocaine: 29 grams - 28 speed and morphine pills) have been made, mainly on inmate visitors, for a total institutional value of $88,342.
The authorities at Donnacona Institution wish to remind citizens that there is a toll-free telephone line (1-866-355-DONA or (3662)) that they can use to provide the appropriate party with information concerning the pressure to which a visitor may be subjected by other visitors and/or inmates engaged in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault and loan sharking. Such information is treated with confidentiality and a Security Intelligence Officer provides follow-up.
