CORRECTIONAL SERVICE CANADA HIGHLIGHTS WOMEN'S CORRECTIONS

LAVAL, QC, February 17, 2005 - The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is releasing today its response to two reports - the Canadian Human Rights Commission report entitled Protecting their Rights: A Systemic Review of Human Rights in Correctional Services for Federally Sentenced Women and the Cross-Gender Monitor's Third and Final Annual Report, which examined the issue of hiring male front-line workers in women's institutions.

Both reports have examined CSC's policies and practices and have put forward recommendations. An action plan has been developed to implement changes and monitor results. CSC will ensure that women's corrections continue to evolve within a frame that respects the law, the dignity and rights of women offenders while contributing to public safety. CSC's responses to these reports are posted on CSC's website at www.csc-scc.gc.ca.
