FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STE-ANNE-DES-PLAINES, QC, February 17, 2005 - On Wednesday, February 17, 2005, at 1:06 p.m., an inmate of the Special Handling Unit was assaulted by five other inmates in a common room. The emergency siren was immediately sounded and a warning shot fired, which put an end to the assault.

No employee was injured in the incident. The inmate, who suffered no serious injuries, was examined at the institutional Health Care Centre. His attackers were confined in segregation.

The incident was limited to this section of the institution, where normal activities have been suspended for a search of the premises. All other units of the institution are operating normally.

An investigation by the Sûreté du Québec is in progress, in cooperation with the management of the institution.
