FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT LECLERC INSTITUTION

LAVAL, QC, April 11, 2005 - On April 10, 2005, at approximately 7:30 a.m., Robert Vacher, an inmate of the Leclerc Institution, a federal medium-security penitentiary, succumbed to a lengthy illness while hospitalized at the Health Centre of the Archambault Institution. The inmate's family has been notified.

Aged 61, Mr. Vacher had been serving a 43-year, 2-month federal sentence since January 23, 1973, for various offences including robbery, attempted robbery and escaping from custody.

A coroner's inquest will be held and the Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
