CONTRABAND AT LECLERC INSTITUTION

LAVAL, QC, April 22, 2005 - At approximately 6:30 a.m. on April 22, 2005, the staff of Leclerc Institution conducted a major drug seizure during a search of an inmate. Information from various sources led to the discovery of 410 grams of hashish with a value of $41,000 in the institution.

The inmate was kept under observation following this seizure since an X-ray examination showed that narcotic substances were still present in his stomach.

The case was transferred to the Sûreté du Québec and criminal charges will be laid against the inmate.

This effort to prevent drugs from being brought into federal institutions is in keeping with a broader perspective, that of the Correctional Service of Canada's Mission to contribute to the protection of society while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control. At the same time the Service strives to implement its strategies to resolve problems related to drug use and the associated health and safety problems.
