FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LAVAL, QC, May 3, 2005 - At 1:30 p.m. on May 3, 2005, staff at Leclerc Institution, a medium security federal penitentiary, conducted a major drug seizure. As a result of information obtained by Security Intelligence Officers and intervention by the canine squad, the Institution's authorities seized 32 grams of crack, 225 grams of marijuana and some Ecstasy pills, for an institutional value of $55,000.
The Correctional Service of Canada is currently conducting an investigation that should result in charges being laid against the persons involved in this attempt to bring drugs into prison.
This effort to prevent drugs from being brought into federal institutions is in keeping with a broader perspective, that of the Correctional Service of Canada's Mission to contribute to the protection of society while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control. At the same time the Service strives to implement its strategies to resolve problems related to drug use and the associated health and safety problems.
