CONTRABAND AT LA MACAZA INSTITUTION

LA MACAZA, QC, May 3, 2005 - On April 30, 2005, as a result of an internal investigation by our Security Intelligence Officers, a woman visiting an inmate was intercepted at the entrance to our institution's visiting area.

A search of her vehicle resulted in the seizure of 166.82 grams of cannabis, with an estimated institutional value of $6,500. As a result of this seizure an inmate was placed in administrative segregation, and charges of conspiracy to bring in drugs could be brought against the inmate and his spouse following the police investigation.

This effort to prevent drugs from being brought into federal institutions is in keeping with a broader perspective, that of the Correctional Service of Canada's Mission to contribute to the protection of society while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control. At the same time the Service strives to implement its strategies to resolve problems related to drug use and the associated health and safety problems.
