CONTRABAND AT ARCHAMBAULT INSTITUTION

SAINTE-ANNE-DES-PLAINES, QC, May 26, 2005 - On May 24, 2005, following an internal investigation conducted by security intelligence officers, drugs were intercepted from the personal property of an inmate at Archambault Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary.

In proceeding with a search of the inmate's personal property, the security intelligence officers found eight small packages of drugs hidden under each sole of a pair of shoes. The packages were wrapped in carbon paper and plastic wrap. A total of 89 grams of hashish was seized, for an estimated institutional value of $8,900.

The inmate was placed in segregation and charges of conspiracy to bring in drugs could be brought against him following the police investigation.

The effort to combat the introduction of drugs into federal institutions is part of a broader initiative in which the Correctional Service of Canada, as part of its Mission, contributes to the protection of society by exercising reasonable, safe, secure, and humane control over the inmates under its responsibility while implementing its strategies for resolving problems related to drug use and the resulting health and safety problems.
