FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DRUMMONDVILLE, QC, May 27, 2005 - At approximately 3:15 p.m. on May 26, 2005, an inmate at Drummond Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary, handed over to correctional officers a package that had been hidden in his body cavities. The package contained 5 grams of marijuana and 32 Rivotril tablets, for an estimated institutional value of $1,300. This seizure followed an internal investigation conducted by our Security Intelligence Officers.
The drugs had apparently been brought in by a woman visiting the inmate during a regular institutional visit. The case has been handed over to the police and charges will be brought against the inmate. The inmate is staying in segregation.
The effort to combat the introduction of drugs into federal institutions is part of a broader initiative in which the Correctional Service of Canada, as part of its Mission, contributes to the protection of society by exercising reasonable, safe, secure, and humane control over the inmates under its responsibility while implementing its strategies for resolving problems related to drug use and the resulting health and safety problems.
