CONTRABAND AT DONNACONA INSTITUTION

DONNACONA, QC, June 10, 2005 - On June 8, 2005, security intelligence officers at Donnacona Institution, a maximum security federal penitentiary, met with an inmate following suspicions of drug trafficking inside the institution.

After being escorted to the health care unit, the inmate was placed under observation in a dry cell, where he co-operated by producing two bags that had been hidden in body cavities.

This intervention made it possible to seize 104 grams of hashish, with an institutional value of over $7,500.

The inmate was placed in segregation; his case will be the subject of a disciplinary hearing. As well, Sûreté du Québec investigators met with him, and charges will likely be laid as a result of the investigation since the inmate was incarcerated for similar offences.

Since the start of the fiscal year, 530.2 grams of hashish, 2.7 grams of cocaine and 27 ecstasy pills, with an institutional value of $42,941, have been confiscated.

The authorities at Donnacona Institution wish to remind citizens that there is a toll-free telephone line (1-866-355-DONA (or 3662)) for reporting any pressure to which a visitor may be subjected by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault and loan sharking. Such information is treated with confidentiality and a Security Intelligence Officer provides follow-up.
