CONTRABAND AT DONNACONA INSTITUTION

DONNACONA, QC, June 13, 2005 - On June 11, 2005, security intelligence officers at Donnacona Institution met with a visitor following suspicions of drug trafficking inside the institution.

After being escorted to the security unit, the visitor co-operated and agreed to produce three parcels hidden in his underwear. This intervention made it possible to seize 82.5 grams of marijuana, with an institutional value of over $6,200.

The inmate who was to receive this delivery was placed in segregation; his case will be the subject of a disciplinary hearing. As well, Sûreté du Québec investigators met with him, and charges will likely be laid as a result of the investigation.

The visitor was transferred to the Sûreté du Québec, whose investigators will meet with him.

Since the start of the fiscal year, 530.2 grams of hashish, 2.7 grams of cocaine, 27 ecstasy pills and 82.5 grams of marijuana, with an institutional value of $49,141, have been confiscated.

The authorities at Donnacona Institution wish to remind citizens that there is a toll-free telephone line (1-866-355-DONA (or 3662)) for reporting any pressure to which a visitor may be subjected by other visitors and/or inmates involved in drug trafficking, intimidation, assault and loan sharking. Such information is treated with confidentiality and a Security Intelligence Officer provides follow-up.
