FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ESCAPE FROM MONTÉE SAINT-FRANÇOIS INSTITUTION

LAVAL, QC, July 13, 2005 - On July 13, 2005, Sylvain Cardinal, a minimum-security inmate, escaped from Montée Saint-François Institution. The inmate had been present at the last formal count at the institution early that morning. At the first signs that the inmate was absent, search procedures were initiated and a count operation was implemented. The support of the Laval Police was requested in order to increase the likelihood of the inmate being apprehended quickly. The escape was officially declared at 11:30 a.m.

The Correctional Service of Canada has shared with the Laval Police and the SQ all of the relevant information that could lead to the apprehension of this individual as soon as possible.

Sylvain Cardinal, aged 33, has been serving a sentence of 2 years and 6 months since May 3, 2005 for various offences related to break and enters. He stands 180 cm tall and weighs 78 kg. He has light brown hair and hazel eyes.

The Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an investigation into the facts to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape.
