FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LAVAL, QC, July 15, 2005 - On July 14, 2005, at 11:41 a.m., Albert Bastien, an inmate of the Leclerc Institution, a federal medium-security penitentiary, died of natural causes at Cité de la Santé de Laval hospital. The inmate's family was present.

Aged 46, Mr. Bastien had been serving a life sentence since February 21, 1986, for manslaughter, murder and possession of narcotics.

A coroner's inquest will be held and the Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
