DONNACONA, QC, July 15, 2005 - On July 13, 2005, at about 9:15 p.m., during activities in the yard area at Donnacona Institution, a maximum-security penitentiary, a fight broke out between two inmates. Following an order by an officer, the fighting stopped and the combatants separated. One of them went into the institution where he was handed over to staff and taken to the Health Care Centre for injuries to his face.
In view of the nature of the injuries, the victim was transferred - under a security escort - to an area hospital for further examination. The offender underwent surgery for fractures to his jaw, cheek and superciliary arch.
His attacker was identified and transferred to segregation.
No staff were injured and public safety was not compromised at any time during the incident.
The Sûreté du Québec was notified and charges of assault causing bodily harm could be laid.
