FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COWANSVILLE, QC, August 9, 2005 - At around 2:30 p.m. on August 3, 2005, staff at Cowansville Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary, conducted a drug seizure as a result of information that had been received.

After observing an inmate during a regular visit, the staff proceeded to search the inmate, leading to the discovery of 5 grams of heroin, wit an institutional value of approximately $5,000.

The Sûreté du Québec was notified and will conduct an investigation.

This effort to prevent drugs from being brought into federal institutions is in keeping with the Correctional Service of Canada's Mission to contribute to the protection of society while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control. At the same time the Service strives to implement its strategies to resolve problems related to drug use and the associated health and safety problems.
