FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LAVAL, QC, August 22, 2005 - On August 19, 2005, staff at the Leclerc Institution, a medium security federal penitentiary, seized 125 grams of hashish with an institutional value of $12,500.
An inmate attempted to introduce this substantial amount of drugs into the Institution by concealing it in his body cavities when he was readmitted after being unlawfully at large. However, officers were on the alert and his strategy was discovered. The inmate will be transferred shortly to a higher security institution.
Efforts to prevent drugs from being brought into federal institutions are in keeping with a broader perspective that of the Correctional Service of Canada's Mission to contribute to the protection of society while exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane control. At the same time, the Service strives to implement its strategies to resolve problems related to drug use and the associated health and safety problems.
