FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH OF AN INMATE AT THE ARCHAMBAULT INSTITUTION

STE-ANNE-DES-PLAINES, Quebec, September 1, 2005 - Gilbert Ross, an inmate at the Archambault Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary, died in the presence of the Health Care Centre nurse, the Institution's chaplain, and members of his family. He had been transferred from the Shepody Institution on August 31, 2005 following a diagnosis of terminal cancer.

In accordance with an agreement signed by the inmate, no resuscitation efforts were made. Death was pronounced by the Institution's physician.

Gilbert Ross was 46 years old and, since March 12, 2004, had been serving an 11 year sentence for theft, forcible confinement, and sexual assault.

The police and the coroner are required to investigate all cases of death of an inmate. As well, the Correctional Service of Canada will conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this occurrence.
